AJE Editors Choice - Risk Factors for Specific Histopathological Types of Postmenopausal Breast Cancer in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study Commentary by Dr. Audrey Saftlas: Risk factors for mucinous and tubular breast cancers, rare variants of ductal breast cancer, are not well established, although their more favorable prognosis suggests that their etiologies are distinct from those for the more commonly-occurring breast cancers. The Editor’s Choice study of the large, post-menopausal, and prospectively-followed NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study population contributes a comprehensive analysis of risk factor differences between these two rare breast cancer variants and the three most common histologic types of breast cancer. While associations with non-reproductive factors varied little by tumor histology, the well-established breast cancer risk factor, late age at first birth, was not associated with the risk of mucinous or tubular tumors. In contrast, current use of menopausal hormone therapy was much more strongly associated with risk of tubular breast cancer than it was with the risk of the other histological types. These findings provide further evidence indicating these rare variants of ductal breast cancer have etiologies distinct from the more common forms of breast cancer. aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/178/3/359.full.pdf+html
