AKE ARTS AND BOOK FESTIVAL PRESS BREIFING PART II The major features of the festival are: 1. Master Classes All master classes will be taught by experts. Some of the classes will take place over three days. We are offering master classes in the following areas: Fiction, short fiction, documentary-making for women, writing poetry that sings, from Page to Stage, Illustrating Children’s Books, Writing for Children, Effective Editing, Interviewing Celebrities, Creating Graphic Novels, Life Writing, Playing to the Gallery: Acting Tips for Practitioners and Art Criticism. 2. Workshops The workshop sessions will give twenty people the fantastic opportunity to learn from the masters. AABF 2013 workshops will focus on: - Rudiments of the Bata Drum Bata Bade Dance 3. Panel Discussions At this year’s festival, there will be 13 stimulating panel discussions, which range from the “Jewel or Jezebel: The Representation of Women in African Literature” to “Re-stitching the Patchwork: Realities of Post-conflict African Societies”. Our exciting panel discussions will feature Nigerian and international authors, thinkers, researchers and academics. 4. Book Chats We are launching 10 books at the festival. Book chats are ninety minutes long and each book chat session will feature two authors. The events will be moderated but the audience will have ample time to interact with the author. 5. Book Fair We are collaborating with Bounty Press to ensure that all the books written by our visiting authors are available at the festival bookstore. At every event, authors’ books will be available outside the venue. Featured authors will also be available for book signings. At the festival, we have 40 exhibition stands/ stalls available at affordable rates, depending on what your individual needs are. Space, electricity, decent lighting and furniture will also be available. 6. Art exhibitions: AABF 2013 will feature two major Art exhibitions. Nigeria Now Exhibition: We are collaborating with Nigeria Now to bring you exciting new work by contemporary Nigerian artists Secondary School Art Exhibition: This exhibition will feature the work of 20 gifted students, ages 14 to 16. We are collaborating with Uzora projects to organize a statewide hunt for talent. 7. Music In collaboration with Elder’s Corner, we will stage a concert that will feature an eclectic mix of musical talent, illustrating the evolution of Nigerian music over the last 60 years. The concert will feature no less than 20 artistes. 8. Film Two films have been selected as the AABF 2013 Films. Home, starring Gbenga Akinnagbe who will be attending the festival will be the first and Pariah, starring Adepero Oduye will be the second. These films will be open to the general public. At our events where Nollywood and Hollywood stars will be present, it will be possible to interact with the screen stars present. 9. Drama The stage adaptation of a best- selling novel will have its command performance at the Ake Arts and Book Festival. 10. Dance A prominent drum and dance tradition in western Nigeria, Bata will feature at the 2013 Ake Arts & Book Festival. 11. Soap Box Writers, poets, designers and manufacturers cherish the opportunity to showcase their arts-related work, their books, their inventions and their products. We are offering thirty-minute slots for this at the AABF.
