My TOFIL acceptance speech will also begin by dedicating my award to these heroes fighting the dysfunctional residuals of our colonial past. In a country that undergoes spurts of euphoric sentimental unity from the Pacmans victories or international beauty titles or EDSA 1 and 2, which are by no means existential footnotes, and also the Papal visit will have structural residues from which we can forge unity, the categorical essentials of nation are largely and more permanently determined by the ability of its people to sacrifice their lives for the nation even if it is long past behind its milestone for nation building, and we find moral equivalence in the ability of a large section of its populace to sacrifice the known comforts of wife/husband and children and their neighbourhoods to seek jobs abroad.
