ALERT: This State Just Made a Move to Make School Lunches Comply With Shariah Law Monday, December 29th, 2014 A state assembly bill is raising some eyebrows. On its face, it seems to be yet another in a litany of school lunch regulations passed by various states. However, a closer inspection reveals it might be a Trojan horse for Shariah law. The bill could mandate that school districts provide halal lunches to students. The bill being considered in New Jersey took shape when lobbyist Madeline Ferraro’s daughter, Brooke, couldn’t get vegetarian options at her school cafeteria. (H/T EAGnews.org.) Instead of doing the obvious thing and making her a lunch, Ferraro instead went to Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera, D-Camden, to force the state to do it instead. “Making vegetarian, vegan, kosher, halal and other cultural dietary options available can increase the likelihood that students will eat the food on the menu and help ensure that New Jersey’s school nutrition programs reach their intended goal,” Mosquera said. Other lawmakers have an even more kumbaya take on it. “On its face, this legislation is about making sure that all students receive the nutrition they need, but the larger notion is that this is a state where we welcome people of all backgrounds,” said Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, D-Passaic. The bill would require a survey of students to see if their dietary needs are being met. If you’re a student, don’t get too excited. Complaining that the school isn’t facilitating your strict Surge and pizza diet won’t work, as Michelle Obama’s ridiculous menu restrictions still remain in effect. The idea that taxpayers are responsible for your child’s lunch choices – whether or not they’re religious – is absurd. The idea that we need to bow to Shariah, or any other religious code, out of “cultural sensitivity” is nonsense. If you don’t like the basic lunch your school is serving, pack your own. Or, you can send them to a religious school. Either one of these is a fine solution. What you cannot do is make the state pay for your religion.
