ALERT for DOGS in Jefferson County: Our veterinary clinic and other clinics in Jefferson County and Kitsap County have been seeing an increase in dogs with the syndrome known as kennel cough. Classic kennel cough is usually caused by a bacteria known as Bordetella bronchisepticum. This bug causes a heavy, harsh and honking cough. Some dogs act fine, but cough heavily; other dogs are quite sick and lethargic and have more significant breathing problems. This outbreak may have started in Kitsap County, but has spread to Jefferson County animals. A recent case where a culture was done showed no Bordetella organisms, and the tissue grew a Streptococcus bacteria. We will try to pass along more information as we learn more about this outbreak. For now, please monitor your dogs for coughing or respiratory distress. If your dog has recently been at a boarding kennel, a dog training class with other dogs, or any gathering where a dog is exposed to a group of other dogs, please call your veterinarian to see if your dog should be examined for infection. There has been no sign of this problem in cats, but if a dog in the home is coughing, monitor other animals and even people family members for respiratory signs. Call our clinic if you have a dog with signs of a cold or respiratory infection and we will gladly help you decide if your pet is sick enough to need a veterinary examination.
