ALGERIA BEAT MALI The group phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifying ended on Tuesday in Blida with hosts Algeria edging Mali 1:0. The match was a mere formality as the Desert Foxes had already been guaranteed top spot in Group H after sealing their place in the play-offs in the last round. Despite having been eliminated, Mali still fielded some big names, most notably former Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita who played all ninety minutes. Dinamo Zagreb striker Hilal Soudani scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute. In yet another formality match today, Egypt thumped Guinea 4:2 in El Gouna. Mohamed Abou-Treika scored one and set up two goals, while a goal by Mohamed Salah ensured he finished the group stage as the top scorer with six goals. The ten group winners will be drawn into fives ties in the play-offs next Monday, with the winners over two legs reaching the Mundial.
