ALGOGULF & ENTERPRISE (ex KINSMAN ENTERPRISE) - 29 February 2004 - Photographed from the ice of the frozen Welland Canal harbour while they were being cut up for scrap at the Marine Salvage scrapyard at Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada.. Original Ektachrome slide by Jeff Cameron.. ALGOGULF was built in 1961 at Montreal, Quebec as J. N. McWATTERS (2) for the Scott Misener Steamship Company of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.. She was renamed SCOTT MISENER (4) in 1990 when CSL and Misener pooled their bulker fleets under the name Great Lakes Bulk Carriers.. In 1995 Algoma Central Marine purchased the ship and she was renamed ALGOGULF (2). She was retired at Hamilton, Ontario in December of 1999 and on 25 May 2002 ALGOGULF was towed out of Hamilton by the tugs PROGRESS and VAC destined for Port Colborne where she was subsequently cut up for scrap along with KINSMAN ENTERPRISE.. KINSMAN ENTERPRISE was built in 1927 at Lorain, Ohio as HARRY COULBY (2)for the Interlake Steamship Company of Cleveland, Ohio.. On 5 December 1981 she laid up at Duluth, Minnesota for the last time however, before being sold for scrap she was purchased by Kinsman Marine Transit to replace their aging HENRY STEINBRENNER. On 18 June 1989 she returned to service as KINSMAN ENTERPRISE (2) and went on to sail for Kinsman for 6 seasons. On 13 December 1995 she was laid up for the last time at Buffalo and over the following 5 years she was used only as a stationary grain storage barge at Buffalo.. Finally on 28 May 2002 she arrived off Port Colborne under tow of the tugs PROGRESS and VAC and by the end of the day she was secured alongside the Marine Salvage scrapping slip in the outer harbour of the Welland Canal.. There she met her end alongside ALGOGULF..
