ALL EARS TUNED INTO CRTC TODAY When the bomb dropped, a flurry of activity immediately commenced. The ‘bomb’ was the discovery that – in early April - the North of Superior Broadcasting Corp (NOSBC) had quietly made an application to the CRTC to request moving the CFNO from its present location in Marathon to Thunder Bay. The small but hardy radio station has been located in Marathon and serving the Northshore and Greenstone region in fine style for over 30 years now. Al Cresswell has been at the mike for over seven years of that and has, in many ways, become a friend of sorts to everyone in the region and magically eliminated hours of the sometimes desolate highway between our communities disappear as – through his work and travel in the region – we have all been connected to each other through this gem of a station. The uproar from the listening region and beyond has been deafening. By the time this became public knowledge, there was only a matter of days before the application process was closed to any intervention from interested parties. But folks in the region made it clear they were not going to just let this go. They were going to put up a fight. A Facebook page (Keep CFNO in Marathon) was set up and a link to the CRTC was placed at the top of the page. This gave folks an opportunity to share their objection for the proceedings. Petitions and posters were drawn up and shared amongst the many communities that would be affected by this proposal. Ideas and information were constantly being shared and exchanged as folks made their way through the process. In the end, a healthy backlash was fired back. In the meantime, the stories and the memories continue to be shared There are many who will be sitting on the edge of their seats as the CRTC meets with NOSBC today. The region is standing with you today Al Cresswell - you can bet there is ‘wall to wall’ support for the ‘hometown sound’ particularly on this day! - - - - - Last week’s “Pitch In’ clean up day was a fine demonstration of community involvement and dedication in Marathon. Even though the weather was quite cool and wet, folks went out solo or with friends, families or groups. Bags were given out at the Rec Complex in the morning and the cleaning up continued on into the afternoon. A drive around showed plenty of well-cleaned areas with heaps of bags and other refuse heaped on the sides of the roads. A grand total of two hundred and fifty bags of garbage were collected! As per other years, the Town of Marathon partnered with the local M&M Meat Shop for their annual Crohn’s and Colitus fundraiser. All participants with the Pitch In event were rewarded with something from the bbq along with chips and a pop. Definitely a win/win/win situation from everyone involved! - - - - - If you hear the word ‘perogy’ and your mouth immediately starts to water, you will definitely want to be at the Marathon Centre Mall this Saturday, May 25th beginning at 11am when St. John United Church is holding a huge Perogy and Bake Sale. Carol Stadey and her dedicated crew have made 98 dozen of tasty little fellas and you can guarantee that none of them will be left behind! And if that isn’t wonderful enough, there will be baking as well – cookies, cupcakes, squares, breads, pies, cakes and more. If you have ever bought baking from St. John’s before, you know that you will not be disappointed. The sale continues on until 4pm that day or until everything is sold – whatever comes first. Funds that are raised at this event will be going towards some needed renovations to the exterior of the church building.
