ALL FANS - Many in the media are now claiming that cycling is the new Golf. What do you think? According to a recent National Travel Survey 43% of the population now owns or has access to a bicycle. However, the main increase in bike use seems to be from those who cycle to work, with around 8% of the working population (3 million people) cycling at least 3 times a week or more. Overall a total of around 20 million people say they cycle once a year or more. At the same time according to a recent survey by KPMG it appears that the number of registered golfers in the UK has declined by over 3% in recent years, which equates to losing roughly 50,000 players a year. However, there are still nearly a million and a half registered golfers, and when you add in the number of recreational golfers who play occasionally the overall total of UK golfers rises to around 4 million people. So, it would seem that the game of golf is still in a fairly healthy condition. However, the reality of modern living means that the majority of those who work just don’t have the spare time to spend 4 to 5 hours on a golf course when they’re looking for some form of an outdoor activity. Besides which golf tends not to be the kind of activity where all the family can participate together, mainly due to the length and difficulty of most of the available courses. So, while cycling may not be the new golf, it is certainly proving to be a better option for many people today. You can check out an interesting article on this subject at: bbc/sport/0/golf/30422698
