ALL I ASK IS THAT YOU READ THIS WITH A OPEN MINE AND HEART. TAKE FROM THIS YOUR OWN WAY OF THOUGHTS. BY THE FAITH THAT YOU BE LEAVE IN. Jesus was Buried By the grace of God Jesus tasted death for every one. In his plan of salvation, God ordained that his Son should not only die for our sins but should also taste death, experience the condition of death, the separation of his soul from his body, between the time he expired on the cross and the time he was raised from the dead. The state of the dead Christ is the mystery of the tomb and the descent into hell. It is the mystery of Holy Saturday, when Christ, lying in the tomb, reveals Gods great sabbath rest after the fulfillment of mans salvation, which brings peace to the whole universe. Christ in the tomb in his body Christs stay in the tomb constitutes the real link between his passable state before Easter and his glorious and risen state today. The same person of the Living One can say, I died, and behold I am alive for evermore: God [the Son] did not impede death from separating his soul from his body according to the necessary order of nature, but has reunited them to one another in the Resurrection, so that he himself might be, in his person, the meeting point for death and life, by arresting in himself the decomposition of nature produced by death and so becoming the source of reunion for the separated parts. Since the Author of life who was killed is the same living one [who has] risen, the divine person of the Son of God necessarily continued to possess his human soul and body, separated from each other by death: By the fact that at Christs death his soul was separated from his flesh, his one person is not itself divided into two persons; for the human body and soul of Christ have existed in the same way from the beginning of his earthly existence, in the divine person of the Word; and in death, although separated from each other, both remained with one and the same person of the Word. You will not let your Holy One see corruption Christs death was a real death in that it put an end to his earthly human existence. But because of the union which the person of the Son retained with his body, his was not a mortal corpse like others, for it was not possible for death to hold him NT and therefore divine power preserved Christs body from corruption. Both of these statements can be said of Christ: He was cut off out of the land of the living, and My flesh will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let your Holy One see corruption. Jesus resurrection on the third day was the sign of this, also because bodily decay was held to begin on the fourth day after death. Buried with Christ. . . Baptism, the original and full sign of which is immersion, efficaciously signifies the descent into the tomb by the Christian who dies to sin with Christ in order to live a new life. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. IN BRIEF What we believe about Jesus Who is Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ is God the Son, who became man for us. Is Jesus Christ truly God? Jesus Christ is truly God, the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son, the Eternal Word, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit always was, is, and always will be. ‘In the beginning was the Word’ (John 1:1) Is Jesus Christ truly Man? Jesus Christ is truly man because he has the nature of man, having a body and soul. Was Jesus Christ always man? Jesus Christ was not always man but he became man in the womb of the Virgin Mary. What do we call the mystery of God becoming Man? We call this mystery ‘the Incarnation’ which means that God the Son, became man, a human being like us in all things except sin. ‘the Word was made Flesh and dwelt among us’ (John 1:14). How many natures are there in Jesus? There are two natures in Jesus, the Divine nature of God and he Human nature of man. How many persons are there in Jesus? There is only one person in Jesus, the person of God the Son. Why did God the Son become Man? God the Son became man to free us from sin and open to us the way to Heaven and everlasting life with God. What does the name ‘Jesus’ mean? The name ‘Jesus’ means ‘Saviour’. What does the name ‘Christ’ mean? The name ‘Christ’ means ‘Anointed’ . What do these names tell us ? That Jesus was anointed by God the Father to be our Saviour To the benefit of every man, Jesus Christ tasted death (cf. Heb 2:9). It is truly the Son of God made man who died and was buried. During Christs period in the tomb, his divine person continued to assume both his soul and his body, although they were separated from each other by death. For this reason the dead Christs body saw no corruption (Acts 13:37). ________________________________________ Heb 2:9. But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. I Cor 15:3. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, Cf. Jn 19:42. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Cf. Heb 4:7-9. He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God Cf. Jn 19:30. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. Cf Col 1: 18-20. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.19For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. Rev 1:18. and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. St. Gregory of Nyssa, Orat. catech. 16: pG 45, 52D. Acts 3:15. but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. Lk 24:5-6. and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6“He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, St. John Damascene, De fide orth. 3, 27: pG 94, 1097. St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 51, 3. Is 53:8. By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? Acts 2:26-27; ‘THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; 27BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. cf. ps 16:9-10. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. Cf. I Cor 15:4; and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures Lk 24:46; and He said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, Mt 12:40; for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jon 2:1; Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, Hos 6:2; He will revive us after two days; He will raise us up on the third day, That we may live before Him. cf. Jn 11:39. Jesus said, Remove the stone. Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days. Rom 6:4; Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. cf. Col 2:12; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Eph 5:26. so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, NT Acts 2:24. But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. More to come Vivat,Jesus
