ALL THEY WANTED WAS A BALL: Children -- no matter in Oakland or war-torn Darfur -- need to play. A simple ball can bring squeals of joy to an entire refugee village. A simple ball doesnt last but an hour in most refugee camps with barbed wire, exposed rebar, and shell fragments litering the ground. For two Bay Area entrepreneurs, that was not acceptable. Not only did they figure out how to make a ball that wouldnt pop, these inventors found a ball that you could slice open with a knife, and still turn around and keep kicking it around the clearing. Its the most durable ball ever created. And then they made a million of them. They won the Jefferson Award Silver Medal tonight, and this is their story....
