ALL the more reason to purchase locally, know your farmer, know there practices. visit the farm, ask about processing, and ask questions. _________________________________________________ The investigation found that the biggest change in meat inspection in the last 50 years — a major retooling of the poultry inspection process — has left the nation’s overall meat inspection efforts short-handed, overworked and in disarray. There was no response to the report from the USDA’s meat inspection agency, the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Less than a week after the investigation was published on KCPT’s website, in the Kansas City Star and on public radio stations throughout the Midwest, a food safety advocacy group filed suit in federal court to stop the new poultry inspection rule. Unless that lawsuit is successful, the rule will take effect in late October. It will turn over some duties of federal meat inspectors to chicken plant employees and permanently phase out up to 600 federal meat inspector positions nationwide. Food & Water Watch, a nonprofit consumer-advocacy group, filed the federal lawsuit Sept. 11 and said in its complaint that the new rule would threaten public health and introduce unwholesome poultry into interstate commerce. A federal judge has given the USDA until Oct. 3 to submit arguments against a request by Food & Water Watch for a preliminary injunction, which would keep the new rules from taking effect.
