ALLEGED N200M SCAM: PANEL DISCOVERS OVER 3000 ILLEGAL WASSCE ENROLMENT A total of three thousand five hundred and seventy-one (3,571) external candidates were added to the legitimate list of students that sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the last three years in Ogun State. This revelation was made today in Abeokuta when the administrative panel of enquiry set up by the Head of Service to look into alleged case of illicit and fraudulent diversion of government funds by officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology presented the report of its findings. It will be recalled that following the petition received on alleged diversion of public funds on payment of WASSCE in the State amounting to N200m, government set up a panel of enquiry to look into the allegation with a view to unravel the claim and recommend appropriate sanctions to prevent recurrence. According to the Chairman of the panel, Alhaji Abdul-Fatai Opebiyi, financial implication of the fraudulent inclusion amounted to Thirty-One Million, Six Hundred and Eight Thousand, Eight Hundred and Seventy-Six naira only (N31,608, 876). He added that apart from this amount, various sums of money were discovered to have been held illegally by certain officers of the Ministry. Opebiyi who is the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Strategy, explained that the panel had recommended appropriate sanctions against culpable officers and suggestions on ways of preventing future occurrences, appreciating God for the successful completion of the assignment in spite of constraints encountered. Responding, the Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle congratulated members for the successful completion of the assignment, expressing optimism that their recommendations would be faultless for adoption. She lauded the panel for assisting government in the assignment without prejudice to the pressure mounted on them, reminding that “whatever we do should be for the progress of the State and the present administration in its Mission to Rebuild”
