Minimum Requirements: Master of Science degree in the Natural Sciences, Criminology or Forensic Science AND a minimum of three (3) years in a death investigation / forensic science setting. OR Bachelor of Science degree in the Natural Sciences, Criminology or Forensic Science AND a minimum of four (4) years in a death investigation / forensic science setting An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. College transcript(s) is required at time of application. Applicants will be required to undergo a comprehensive criminal background check . Applicants must pass, prior to appointment, a drug test, lifting/pulling test of 100lbs and a psychological exam. Applicants must have and maintain a valid PA driver’s license. Department Summary: The Medical Examiner’s Office in Allegheny County is committed to deliver high quality professional forensic and laboratory services to the citizens of Allegheny County. Staff supports the obligation to investigate sudden, unnatural, and violent deaths with compassion for families and friends during their time of grief and provide analytical support to investigative agencies. The office applies current scientific methods for evidence analyses and investigations to effectively assist law enforcement, judicial court systems, the Public Defender’s Office and health environmental agencies. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Manager of Operations, this position will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Allegheny Medical Examiner’s Office morgue operations, specifically autopsy and investigations personnel. This position will be required to work closely with the news media and will require being on call twenty-four (24) hours, seven (7) days per week. Duties: • Provides operational oversight of the morgue operations through the development of strategic plans, policies and procedures to ensure that the goals and objectives of the office are met. • Manages employees’ performance and professional development. • Implements and maintains quality control standards. • Delegates and assigns work by prioritizing and managing cases. • Communicates with families and partners with law enforcement agencies on an as needed basis; serves as a point of contact for the office. • Compiles reports related to cases and personnel as requested. • Prepares and manages staff schedules. • Testifies in Courtrooms. • Provides tours, lectures and attends meetings. • Manages the office Right – to – Know and county information center inquires. • Prepares and submits morgue purchasing requests. • Performs other duties as requested. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: • Operations of the Medical Examiner’s Office • Management and business analysis techniques • Personnel management • Collective bargaining agreements • Standard Medicolegal procedures • Case management Ability to: • Make strategic decisions • Plan and direct the work of others • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside organizations • Communicate effectively orally and in writing • Use standard office equipment, including a PC with word processing and/or accounting programs • Learn Laboratory Information Management Systems • Problem solve • Maintain on-call status Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
