ALLERDALE’S WORLD CUP ANTHEM TO BE TELEVISED INTERNATIONALLY Cumbrian composer, Russell Burbush, has written an uplifting celebratory anthem for the Rugby World Cup (RLWC2013), to mark its arrival in Workington later this month. The song was commissioned by Allerdale Borough Council as part of the Welcome the World celebrations, a programme of cultural events, participatory activity and performances taking place in the region in the run up to the big event. The four minute track, entitled Welcome to the World, will be played at the Tonga, Scotland and Italy matches that are being held at Workington’s Derwent Park Stadium and televised internationally in October and November. Executive Councillor Mark Fryer, who is responsible for Economic Growth, said: “The Rugby League World Cup is within touching distance now and I can’t wait to hear the choir singing a song composed in West Cumbria by Russell and heard right throughout the World. How good is that? I would urge anyone who wants to get involved with the games and the cultural programme to get stuck in and just do it!" Keswick-based Russell, a musician and composer for both TV and theatre and a director of New Arts North, a community arts organisation specialising in music and visual arts, says he was delighted to get involved. He added, “The song was written after I visited Derwent Park stadium in Workington. It is a medium paced song with an anthemic feel - very much along the same lines as a Doves or Embrace track. People are being encouraged to listen to the song, and share it on social media channels like Facebook. We want people of all ages to get involved and celebrate a sporting event through a song that they can sing together.” As part of the wider RLWC2013 programme Russell is working with Sarah Wallcook to recruit, train and lead the West Cumbria’s RLWC2013 Choir. This community choir will perform as part of the pre-match entertainment at Derwent Park on 29 October and 3 November and will sing a selection of songs including the RLWC 2013 theme Welcome to the World and national anthems for the three countries playing (Scotland, Tonga and Italy). New Arts North will also be working with schools and brass bands for the live events. If you are 16 years or over and would like to get involved in the community choir or if your school or community band would like to take part please contact [email protected] For more information please visit newartsnorth.co.uk or find Welcome to the World Song on facebook. youtube/watch?v=USF_jSj-DMQ
