ALLY McCOIST believes Craig Mather’s appointment as Rangers’ permanent chief executive is another step towards stability he feels the club needs. Mather moved into the post on a temporary basis at the end of April when previous incumbent Charles Green resigned from the role. He was then confirmed as the Yorkshireman’s full-time replacement yesterday, with Walter Smith immediately backing the move and praising his commitment and vision for the future. McCoist has struck up an encouraging working relationship with Mather over the last three months as they have developed a good understanding together. And the manager has spoken of his satisfaction at getting the opportunity to continue moving in the same direction as they look to keep taking the Light Blues forward. McCoist, speaking in pre-match interviews before the game at Bristol City, said: “I’m delighted about it, absolutely delighted, and I’ve phoned Craig to congratulate him. “I’ve said all along that we need to get stability at boardroom level and at the higher levels within the club. “I believe we’re getting there now, I really do. I certainly hope so because that’s what we’ve been crying out for. “The last couple of years have been traumatic to say the least for the football club but things are settling down and that helps. “I’ve been working with Craig over players and pre-season and him and I are getting on really, really well. “It’s important we are singing from the same hymn sheet and while we’ve still got a fair way to go, we’re going in the right direction and that’s good for people to see.”
