ALMA, CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO. Except those who were very poor, who had been booted out Because their clothing was so plain, their purses none too stout. They were not too proud to approach Alma in their clogs, Wond’ring how to worship when denied their synagogues. For they had labored long and hard to dress the granite stone, To carry bricks and mortar, uncomplaining as a drone – And when the synagogues were done the affluent decreed That such unsightly paupers must depart with all due speed. Not for them the polished stand, whereon the haughty rich Proclaimed their kinship with the Lord to such a fervid pitch. It came to pass that Alma saw their lowliness of heart; That they were ready to attempt a new and humble start. He told them that to worship God no building was required, That they could pray to Him in anyplace that they desired. Not only that, but they should pray in joy, not once a week, But ev’ry day, from dawn to dusk, they ought His face to seek. Have faith, have faith – though it may be the size of mustard seed. Trust my words, good people, and soon see what you will breed! Take that seed and plant it in good soil, then nourish well; You’ll find that it will grow and bud, and fruit begins to swell. Like any tree it needs your care, do not neglect it if It is slow to bring forth fruit – don’t let your hearts be stiff. With thoughtful care you’ll harvest fruit such as you’ve never tasted, And find that time spent with the Gospel never counts as wasted. Your faith matured will bring you such a harvest as few know, And you will want this sacred seed to scatter and to sow.
