ALMOST PERFECT CHRISTIANS: The world is full of interesting people. I met a man many years ago, a hindu, and in a friendly interaction told me looking straight into my eyes without a blink that he had never sinned in his entire life. He was serious. I was dumbfounded and was speechless as I stared back straight into his eyes. Of recent I was in another interaction with a fella, a Christian man who claims to know the Bible. He said that the last time he sinned was about a decade ago and never since then. He also related that he has a friend, a Christian too who cannot even remember when he sinned last because it was so long ago. I am again dumbfounded. He tells me that Jesus commanded that those who love Him and abide in Him should STOP sinning altogether by sheer will power and that is a mark of a victorious Christian over sin. Absolutely! Period! He also says that those who still struggle with sin are not saved and will go to a Christless grave. That is to Hell. For all his claims, this chap says occasional sinning is ok but not the habitual. I wonder as to how less frequent is occasional sinning and how more frequent sinning makes it habitual? He denies the sinful nature of humanity and says that all are born sinless but become sinners only when they sin. Going by this philosophy, surely there must have been someone, in fact millions somewhere in time past and present who must have lived without sinning, nyet, not a dot all their lives hence needing not a Savior making ideal candidates for heaven. (The Bible records one possible case of such a man called Enoch close to the creation past.) Well this chappy I am talking about must be almost perfect and his friend even more perfect for not sinning for long periods of time, decades. I bet they are very holy too. I am deemed by him as unsaved and that unless I repent, I will be dead in my sins. Pity me! I am so glad there are lots of almost perfect people walking among us unholy ones. As for me folks, my victories over my sinful nature are gained moment by moment in Christ Jesus. I am saved by grace and I still live by that grace of God, simply trusting day by day and living by His love, confessing my sins as He convicts me, the hidden sins of the heart and at times the wilful ones too. I am so glad I have a merciful Advocate who pleads for me as my High Priest before God, my Savior Jesus Christ. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1: 8,9)
