HERE IS A REVIEW OF WHAT WAS POSTED IN NOVEMBER: Our FEBRUARY 2015 presentation will be “Nightcapes” presented by Royce Bair. Royce’s images have graced the pages of National Geographic, Smithsonian and American Photo to name a few. His photographic style often features the Milky Way shown stretched above or across an iconic foreground. While you have probably seen many emulate his style, Royce continues to push the astro-landscape photography envelope. He teaches his methods through free lectures and paid workshops. He is a true master of the craft and thoroughly enjoys seeing his students go beyond what he has done, photographing nightcapes under starry skies with new landscapes or other features. This will not just be a slide show of Royces work, but an informational and inspirational presentation of techniques, planning, equipment selection, light painting, exposure blending, noise reduction and exposure calculation among others. He will also have a robust question and answer period following the session. “I’m a wedding photographer…what can I do with a nightscape?”….”I have never even seen the Milky Way in Indiana so how can I photograph it?”. Royce can answer these and more! The techniques you will learn, or improve upon, will open up new photo opportunities as well as another eight hours of the day to pursue your photographic interests! A few of our fellow members joined Brian Wiggins and I during a brief but very fun nightscape meet-up in New Harmony last November. From the photos that were shared, I think we proved that there is a place for this genre in the tri-state and in our portfolios. I can pretty well guarantee that no one will view the “roofless church” or the Harmonie Way Bridge in quite the same light again! It was some of these member images shared with Royce that are the reason for his visit to Evansville. While most of his presentations take place in major cities such as New York and San Francisco, he was thrilled by our interest in the subject. He would rather be with an interested crowd than just a very large one. He also probably took one look at my images and said “that boy needs help!”. For whatever reason, it is a big deal for him to have accepted our invitation (Royce pays ALL of his own expenses except a ride from the airport that Brian or I will provide). At the same time it can be a big deal for the FACC in attracting other guests who may think Evansville is too small or distant a market. So mark your calendars. February 10th, 7-9pm at the Ivy Tech Auditorium. This is not a members only event but we will start with the FACC and other local photo groups such as the Evansville Photography Group, Audubon, Evansville Astronomical Society, Owensboro, etc., to make sure the Tri-State is well represented. THIS IS A TOTALLY FREE EVENT but RESERVATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED! If you are not a member of the FACC, welcome. Enjoy the presentation and consider joining the club. Help us continue to bring great programs to the area and convince those in our own photographic community to share their experiences like Al Perry in December and others who have presented before. DISCLAIMER: Of course anything can change at any time due to forces beyond our or the presenters control - airlines, weather, health, etc.,etc. Still, we are on Royce’s Official itinerary and look forward to this fantastic educational opportunity.
