ALS Canada Financials - The Facts We wanted to re-post the details of ALS Canada’s 2013 financials numbers to ensure the information you receive reflects the fiscal responsibility and true facts around ALS Canadas financial performance. Firstly, ALS Canada and the Provincial Societies do not have any relationship to US organizations. All revenue and expenses reported from the US are not applicable to any of our Canadian ALS Provincials Societies or ALS Canada. Within Canada, the ALS Provincial Societies are separate organizations. Thus, each province will have different financial statements and reporting mechanisms that correlate directly to their charitable purpose. However, we do work together provincially, helping families living with ALS, and from a financial perspective the ALS Provincial Societies contribute to the national research program as 40% of the revenue raised through (prior to the ice bucket challenge) our largest national WALK for ALS fundraiser goes toward the research program. The information we are providing you, relates directly to ALS Canada, as the national organization providing client services across Ontario; jointly funding and solely administering a national ALS research program; and advocating to increase Compassionate Care Benefits (CCB) at a federal level for caregivers and healthcare professionals. The financial performance below reflect ALS Canada 2013 financials. The Breakdown of ALS Canadas 2013 Financial Performance Against our Charitable Purpose In 2013, ALS Canada dedicated 29% to the national research program, but it is important to point out ALS Canada does much more beyond supporting ALS research, as we also serve the 1,100 people in Ontario living with ALS through such things as the provision and assistance with equipment, support groups, and home visits as they navigate the progression of the disease. We advocate locally, within the healthcare system and federally to have better support for people and their families living with ALS. ALS Canada is also Member of the Federation Council of ALS Societies across Canada, and as the largest, national entity we also provide support to the other Provinces so they are better able to serve their population of people living with ALS. In total 64% of our budget for 2013 was directed towards charitable purpose. ALS Canada audited/published financials for 2013 The breakdown of the funds ALS Canada received for 2013 are: • 29% research - grants (21%), program support – national ALS Canada Research Conference, travel grants for ALS researchers, etc. (8%) • 21% client services • 6% public awareness • 4% federation – national support • 4% volunteer program development • Admin (9%) • Governance (2%) • Fundraising (25%) Explanation around ALS Canadas Financial Performance We recognize fundraising was a significant portion of our overhead in 2013. However, when allocating dollars, we ensure we align with the acceptable guidelines put forth by CRA and Imagine Canada. ALS Canada does not receive any government funding. All dollars coming into our organization are from donors. Our fundraising events have been one of our primary revenue drivers to fund our charitable purpose – especially the WALK for ALS. Because of that reason, we employ a comprehensive fundraising portfolio. Just as you would approach your personal investment, we invest in low risk/higher cost fundraising initiatives balanced with higher risk/lower costs initiatives. For instance, we wouldn’t want to see a season of bad weather wipe out all of our WALK FOR ALS events so we balance the portfolio, as donations are the only funding source we have. There are costs associated to be able to solicit funds and donor engagement. These costs include items like park and garbage permits, direct mail programs and support for third party events such as donation pages on our website. Governance was also higher last year as we had costs associated with a merger between ALS Canada and ALS Ontario, which was done to create great efficiencies and cost savings for the future and we are already seeing those savings translate this year. Our expectations on the opportunities from the financial impact of the Ice Bucket Challenge for 2014 We recognize how fortunate we are from your support with the Ice Bucket Challenge. Our expectations, when budgeting using the dollars given to us through the Ice Bucket Challenge will foresee a decrease in percentage allocation directed at awareness and fundraising. We thank you again for your support. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Rebecca Grima, Director of Communications and Marketing at [email protected]
