ALTAS DISPLAY GRIT IN MASSIVE WIN VS. CARDINALS University of Perpetual Help Altas made mince meat of the Mapua Cardinals, 91-57, to begin their NCAA Season 90 campaign on a high note, last June 30, 2014 at The Arena in San Juan. Out to make amends after a forgettable performance last season, Earl Thompson played with the ferocity of a wounded tiger to finish with 27 points and 16 rebounds as the Altas opened their campaign in devastating fashion. The 6-foot-1 Thompson also had six assists, two blocks and two steals to help the Altas break the game wide open after only two quarters. For the 20-year-old Thompson, it was a game that redeemed him after a forgettable performance last year when he struggled after suffering a slipped disc in a pre-season tournament two years ago. “Hindi pa ako masyado fully recovered noon. Hopefully, makabawi ako this year,” said Thompson, a native of Digos City, Davao del Sur. Juneric Baloria, meanwhile, added 26 points, four boards and four assists. The Altas’ 34-point winning margin was NCAA’s biggest since the San Beda Lions routed the Emilio Aguinaldo Generals, 118-64, on Sept. 2, 2011. Perpetual Help’s win was so lopsided that Thompson and Baloria, who unleashed a combined 53 points, came four points shy of matching the Cardinals’ total output. “Ine-expect ko na tatalunin namin ang Mapua, pero hindi ko ine-expect na ganito kalaki,” Perpetual head coach Aric del Rosario said about the Atoy Co mentored MIT Cardinals. Perpetual’s massive win could well serve as a warning not only for the Red Lions but also to the other teams aspiring to nab this year’s title. The Altas has recently won the Fr. Martin’s Cup and defeated UAAP champion De La Salle University in the FilOIl Premier Cup. “Final Four na kami last two years kaya umaasa kaming mas maganda pa ipakita namin ngayong taon,” said del Rosario, the oldest at 74 years but the most titled in the current batch of coaches this year who steered the Altas for a two straight Final Four appearances since he came on board.
