ALTERNATIVE USE: is one of the many ways we adapt Victorian and other period lifestyles to our contemporary environment. While not restoration, it none-the-less can prove to be a charming reflection of the past. I have served soups and fancy cooked dishes in lovely old chamber pots and used the large, matching waste for large flower arrangements,as well asfor a waste basket. Door knobs and curtain poles have been transformed into towel racks for the bath, as have metal pickets from the fence. Beautiful porcelain pitchers serve admirably for vases and I have even wired them for lamp bases. An old wattering can likewise was transformed into a lamp base. I have recycled old pieces of deer antler, transforming them into cabinet pulls and door handles. Beautiful Victorian petticoats and tablecloths (both with holes) were recut and fashioned into curtains and for pillow covers. A cast off Victorian dresser which was all apart and with pieces missing, was transformed into a large and unusual picture frame. The overall period interior remains, but with a touch of magic and whimsy. You are only limited by your imagination. In the process, it is important to have a good and solid sense of design.
