ALYSSA MOSHER, CBC: The Territory’s Regular MLAs are calling on the government to make organ donation easier in the Northwest Territories. Currently, people can’t donate or receive organs in the territory. Regular MLAs voted unanimously this afternoon to support the revision of territorial legislation that regulates organ donation. They say it’s out of date and vague. Yellowknife MLA Robert Hawkins has a close friend who lost a child that needed a transplant. He says donation can be a difficult decision, but Northerners should have a choice. HAWKINS: It doesn’t mean there’s going to be a flood of donations. No, it won’t. But what it means is people have access to a process to allow this to allow, because if somebody’s last wish of their life is to help sustain someone else’s life, allow them to return to a normal life, I mean, why would be denying this? CBC: Seven people in the territory are now waiting for organs. The Health Minister says harvesting tissue and organs for transplant in the Territory would be a challenge. Tom Beaulieu says there are no specialized laboratories here now and they would be expensive to set up and run. He says potential donors can be sent to Edmonton to have their organs harvested.
