#AMA Boss joins Clean up exercise to commemorate birthday Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Monday joined about 100 youth at the London Market in Accra to clear filth to mark his 58th birthday. He told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the clean-up was part of his conscious efforts to create public awareness on the effects of filth and warned that anyone who littered the streets would be prosecuted. Dr Vanderpuije said the exercise also became necessary because the residents were being exposed to serious health problems such as inhaling of dangerous fumes that could have adverse effects on them. He appealed to people in the community to support the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in its efforts to ensure that sanity prevailed at the London Market. Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, Director of Public Health of the AMA, stressed the need for assembly members to encourage the people in their various communities to attach importance to environmental sanitation. He said it was the responsibility of traders in the London Market to make sanitation and cleanliness part of their everyday activities. Dr Boateng expressed concern about the low communal spirit among the residents, which he said, was not good enough to eradicate diseases. Madam Gifty Solomon, a resident, told the GNA that it was of grave concern that squatters who occupy kiosks and containers in the market not only dump their domestic wastes into the drains but also indulged in anti-social activities in the area. ghanadistricts/news/?read=51475
