AMANTLE GETS SILVER The 400 metres runner, Amantle Motsho on Monday (August 12) won a silver medal at the World Championships in Russian. However, most Batswana might feel their star was unlucky not to retain her championship. Amantle lost in a photo finish to Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu. The American, Natasha Hastings seemed to take the early lead in the first 200 metres, but in the last half of the field it was clear that Amantle was on the driving seat. At the very end, Ohuruogu caught up and only won because she dipped her head over the line, which Amantle runner did not do. The Maun-born runner seemed to be too confident of victory in the last few metres as she simply ran over the line. However, victory in such a tight race is determined by which athelete’s upper body (chest, head) crossed the line first, not the feet. Amantle was the clear favourite after Sunday’s (August 11) semifinals having qualified with an impressive time of 49’56 seconds ahead of the Russian Kseniya Ryzhova (50’48 seconds) She had done the country proud over the past decade, being a triple Olympian who has represented Botswana at the 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. In 2010, she was ranked second overall in the diamond league circuit after British rival Allyson Felix, in a year Amantle won Botswana’s first ever gold medal at the Commonwealth games. She proceeded to win further gold at the 2011 All Africa Games in a year she became the world 400 metre champion at Daegu. BOPA well done sister
