Suddenly, the door burst open and Mansfield de Courtenay Baron entered in a fluster. Shaking his head at the intrusion, Commander Pape, mid forties, slightly built and disapproving, set down his pointer on a nearby lectern and steadied his posture with a black ebony walking stick topped with a silver rose. ‘Sorry, I’m late, gentlemen. Has it started yet?’ asked Mansfield. Commander Pape shifted his weight on the stick, turned, and with a forced but prudently welcoming smile said, ‘Ah, it’s you Mansfield. Wouldn’t you know it? It’s all over, I’m afraid. Pegasus turned up trumps again. I expect you’d like to hear the tape?’ ‘Damn! It went down earlier than planned then?’ ‘It would appear so but Sabre Force was waiting patiently.’ ‘In that case, yes, of course, if I may,’ replied Mansfield. In his mid thirties, the slightly plump Mansfield de Courtenay Baron was casually dressed in a dark blue corduroy jacket over an open necked light blue shirt, denim jeans and dark slip on shoes. Smoothing his prematurely thinning back hair; he then shrugged his broad shoulders and waited for a reply. ‘Admiral?’ queried Commander Pape. Admiral Crow continued to study the map, was aware of his undisputed authority, and without losing focus replied, ‘Let him hear the tape, Commander. He’s entitled.’ Engaging Mansfield, Commander Pape invited him to take a seat, flicked a switch on the radio apparatus and said, ‘It rolls on for a few minutes or more. In a couple of places gunfire can be heard.’ Mansfield relaxed, sat down, and listened to the commentary. There was a hint of static before the narration burst into life: ‘This is Sabre One, I have control.’ ‘’Roger, Foxtrot out.’ ‘Sabre One to Sabre units, I have control, stand by, four x-rays in sight.’ SILENCE ‘Sabre One, I have control... Stand by.... Stand by.... Stand by..... Go!’ GUNFIRE ‘Sabre Three, X-Ray Two down,’ ‘Sabre Two, X-Ray Three down.’ GUNFIRE MORE GUNFIRE SILENCE GUNFIRE ‘Sabre Three, X-Ray Four down.’ SILENCE ‘Sabre One confirms device safe, repeat device safe.’ Sabre One, all units, X-Ray One escaping.’ GUNFIRE GRENADES EXPLODING GUNFIRE SILENCE ‘Sabre One calling Foxtrot, reporting a contact. Three X-Rays down. Device is safe. X-Ray One has escaped across the border. Authority to pursue requested.’ STATIC ‘Negative, Sabre One. Abort, abort, abort.’ ‘Roger Foxtrot. All Sabre Units... Abort... Abort.... Abort.... Stand down to the extraction point.’ Commander Pape looked approvingly into Mansfield’s solid grey eyes and offered, ‘Congratulations, Mansfield. An excellent result, I believe.’ But what happened next? Who escaped? And who are the people playing the tape?
