AMEER KHAN -A DILIGENT ARTISAN OF TAXILA FORESEE BRIGHT FUTURE IN STONE CRAFTS… Ameer Khan was born at 1971 at Mohallah Dibian at Taxila in a working class family that was engaged in doing different kind of labor work available in and around Taxila. The most common labor/work available during the previous 2 to 3 decades was quarrying, transportation of stones and working at stone crush factories. Ameer Khan got his basic education in a village school but could not continue his education due to poor financial conditions and from hereon he started working as a raw-hand laborer. Later on he drove a donkey cart for transportation of stone from mountains to stone factories. His elder brother started working as a stone craft artisan and owned a stone craft workshop at Taxila. Ameer Khan joined his brother on his request and persuasion and learned the skill of stone crafting over there, but his knowledge and ability was limited to on the job work experience and henceforth did not excelled, further. The government intervention through PSIC in the Stone Craft cluster of Taxila was taken as a ray of hope for the deprived and suppressed artisans of Taxila. The project team of stone craft Taxila approached the artisans for documenting them and thereby met Ameer Khan. He was an ordinary stone turner who works on a lathe machine to produce different utilitarian artifacts. The project team provided him innovative designs and advisory services to improve his product quality and later on he participated in an artisans workshop organized at the camp office of the stone crafts Taxila, where he learned modern techniques of stone crafting. The project team provided marketing support and facilitated Ameer Khan to display his artifacts at various exhibitions for promotion of his skills and work. Though these activities he was able to broaden his clientele. Now Ameer Khan is known as skilled artisans of the stone craft cluster Taxila and enjoys respect and honor among his colleagues and customers. Ameer Khan always persuades the artisans of Taxila to take full benefit of the presence of the Project Team of PSIC stone crafts Taxila to build up their capacity for their well being.
