AMERICA RECYCLES DAY IS TOMORROW! TAKE THE PLEDGE ON AMERICA RECYCLES DAY By Lynne Gilbert, Member of the Keep Pemaquid Peninsula Beautiful Steering Committee America Recycles Day is a national initiative by Keep America Beautiful and is the only nationally recognized day and community-driven awareness event dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. Since 1997, communities across the country have participated in America Recycles Day on November 15 to promote recycling awareness, commitment, and action to reduce waste, reuse items where possible, and recycle the rest of our waste material into new products. Recycling conserves resources, saves energy, reduces carbon emissions, reduces landfill costs, and creates jobs. Many materials in our everyday lives can be given a second useful life by recycling. The theme of this year’s event is “I Want To Be Recycled”, which focuses attention on the possibilities: recycling plastic bottles into park benches, steel food cans into bicycle frames, and cereal boxes into board games; plastic containers can become fleece jackets or playground equipment; glass jars can become kitchen tiles or wall insulation. Aluminum cans can become, well, new aluminum cans! A can made from recycled aluminum costs half as much to make as a can made from new aluminum. Or you can think of it this way: Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your television for 4 hours. Consider this fact: Dumping 10,000 tons of waste in a landfill creates six jobs, whereas recycling 10,000 tons of waste creates 36 jobs. It all adds up to economic benefit! Simply put, recycling is good for the economy as well as for the health and well-being of our communities. If you recycle your household waste, you are making a healthier planet possible.
