AMERICAN SLANG WORDS: COOL & AWESOME 1. Cool When used as a slang word in American English, cool is an adjective that means something is good, in-style, funny, interesting, or anything that can be characterized as positive. Here are some examples of the word ‘cool’ in a conversation * Jay-Z’s new CD is really cool. In this situation, saying that the CD is cool means that the music has a good sound that you enjoy. It communicates the quality of the music to the other person. * You are going on vacation next week? That’s cool! Here you are using cool to express your excitement for someone’s plans. If your friend or family member tells you they are doing something fun and exciting soon, responding with “That’s cool” will show them that you are excited for them and interested in what they have going on in their life. * His shirt is pretty cool, but I think mine is better. In this example you are using ‘cool’ to tell someone that you do agree that you like the shirt, but you also don’t think it is the best. This is a more difficult use of the word that I want you to really think about. Remember when I said this word can help you connect with other people? It is such a commonly used word that you can use in a sentence in a positive way, even if you don’t totally agree with what the person is saying. Let’s look at another example: “American Gangster wasn’t my favorite movie, but it was still pretty cool.” 2. Awesome It is similar to ‘cool’ but the main difference is that using the word ‘awesome’ usually communicates more enthusiasm to the person you are speaking with. Use ‘awesome’ anytime you really like something. Here are some examples of the word ‘awesome’ in a conversation * I can’t believe you are giving me tickets to the concert. You are awesome!! In a situation where someone gives you something unexpected or is very generous, telling them they are awesome will help you communicate how thankful you are. This is a very nice compliment to give someone! * That pizza we had for lunch was awesome! Some of the best I’ve ever had. Even when you are talking about something simple like pizza or a sandwich, if it is so good that it makes you excited then use the word ‘awesome’ to describe it to your friends. ‘Awesome’ can also be used in more formal situations, too. If you experience something that is powerful and moving, it is appropriate to use the word ‘awesome’ to describe the importance of that experience. This can include a religious experience or describing an amazing piece of art you saw for the first time. Let’s look at another example using ‘awesome’ this type of situation: * The paintings I saw at the art museum were just awesome. I’ve never seen such beautiful art in my life. Here we are expressing the emotion of a single event by using the word ‘awesome’. In this type of situation be sure to use it in a more serious tone so the other person knows that it was an enjoyable experience that was also very important to you. By "American English University"
