AMERICAN SNIPER Directed by Clint Eastwood Starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller American Sniper is about a Navy SEAL called Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper in a much bulkier body) and his journey from childhood bully-fighting to being a legendary Sniper in Iraq. Cooper plays a Texan Cowboy who wants to become a Navy SEAL and eventually meets a woman called Taya who is played by a brunette Sienna Miller. They both witness the 9/11 events on the TV and Kyle is called up for his first tour of Iraq whilst he is at his wedding to Taya along with his comrades who are in attendance. It turns out that Kyle has incredible Sniper abilities which are used significantly during each tour whilst in War in Iraq. Eastwoods direction is more intense drama and uses his skillset like an execution of a cowboy but that is where the similarities stop. This is one of the better War films and you are presented with a lot of intense battle scenes which makes good viewing as you are never bored and are intrigued by Kyles character. The facts are that he is a very good sniper who will always look out for his fellow SEALS. It is when Kyle is home in the States that he finds himself unable to cope with home life of wife and kids – hed rather be on tour. Cooper is very good in this role making you wonder what drives this character to being such a good sniper but unable to cope with normal life. There is no graphic violence – no showing of bodies blown into pieces. There is a scene where a mother is with her child and she appears to be walking uncomfortable so there is tension whether she is a threat to the troops that are storming her town and if Kyle will take her out. So very good drama, build-up and well-paced story of how Kyle became the sniper legend. It is a long film but it is another case of rushing the ending style of film because it has a sudden ending and then you are left to read what happened to Kyle and the aftermath events. Maybe another 10 minutes added would have served purpose here. Also the end credits are silent, no music at all so you walk out of the cinema in a solemn stance. Maybe a typical American ending here as lost such a treasured sniper down to the fallout that many soldiers suffer when their tour ends and injuries suffered. In saying this, though, I much preferred it to The Hurt Locker and also Zero Dark Thirty. 3.5/5 for me but lost ½ because of the sudden ending. Good war film though. Trivia – if you are a fan of graphic comic books then you will love the use of The Punisher in this film. https://youtube/watch?v=5bP1f_1o-zo
