#AMM! Today I will feature one of my favorite records (the original) Water No Get Enemy first recorded by one of my heroes, the God Fela Kuti! When I first started the process for this re imagining, I was trying to figure out how I could do it and still have it make sense without all of the lyrics from the original. Anyone that is a fan of Felas music know, his music was very spiritual. So, taking on this record was no small task for me as his music has meant a lot to me. Musically, I wanted to keep the groove but inject it with a small dose of my sound. There is also the influence of Afro Cuban jazz in this record. I thought the idea of mixing Afro Cuban jazz with Afrobeat was a pretty cool idea and made for a pretty interesting groove altogether. And then, I decided to sing the horn arrangement from the original record and add harmonies underneath them on certain parts. Doing that, I felt it gave the record a new and different feel but still stayed true to the blueprint already mapped out by the Master, Fela.
