AMSTERDAM FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO STRUCTURE FIRE ON WILLIAM STREET The Amsterdam Fire Department responded to a large structure fire this afternoon on William Street. When firefighters arrived on scene the fire was already coming out of the front windows of the house. Fire officials say one person was inside at the time of the fire, but was able to escape without injuries. Amsterdam Fire Chief Richard Liberti says it is believed the fire started in the downstairs unit, but quickly spread to the upstairs apartment. Most of the fire damage is on the first floor, but you can see the exterior is damaged and it got into the eaves of the attic, said Amsterdam Fire Chief Richard Liberti. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting with the two families that are homeless.
