AN INVITATION AND A WARNING The offer: There will be a screening of Spice World at the Chansion Friday night around 9. If you havent seen it, I assure you it is worth your while. Easily the best film of 1997 (sorry Titanic, L.A. Confidential, Good Will Hunting and Boogie Nights!). There will be booze. The caveat: I was not always a Spice Girls fan. In fact, I loathed them. We were doing a sketch show and we needed to find the worst of the worst, a group that represented all that is awful and banal about pop music. We settled on the Spice Girls and I started listening to them ironically. And slowly, I found myself drawn into their web of catchy melodies and bubblegum feminism. The lesson here - Patrick Rothfuss put it best: We all become what we pretend to be.” If you do a thing ironically for long enough, you will become it. Thats why ironic racism especially rubs me the wrong way. Eventually, it becomes real. Dont be like me, revering a terrible film 15 odd years later because you thought itd be hilarious to blare Wannabe out the window as you drive past the mall. But if you *do* find yourself at a Klan rally in 2030 because you thought wearing hipster Tea Party shirts in 2014 was a good idea - dont say I didnt warn you.
