AN NOC TO GO TO VANCOUVER The year is 1957. My moms brother Jamshed wound up his export business and decided to go to vancouver for good. Jamshed uncle was an honest man and in business especially you cannot be and out and out honest man. He was continuously harassed by the income tax officer for weeks on end and was unable to get the assessment order inorder to get the no objection certificate. One sunday evening mom,dad and i had gone to see jamshed uncle, his loving wife roda and a newly born son yezdi. The normally cheerful uncle had a worried frown on his countenance. On enquiring dad got the answer that he was getting sick going with his CA to the income tax office atleast twice a week and there was no result. Dad told him the reason for the dilly-dally but jamshed uncle would hear nothing of it. He said he was an honest man and did not believe in palm greasing. Dad, who was a past master in handling such issues, smiled and told .....jamshed at this rate you will postpone the departure date. The evening passed and we came home. Dad told mom that your brother is unnecessarily being harassed and that in max 7 days he meaning dad ....given the go ahead by her brother would bring the assessment order home. Mom just listened and did not say anything. A few days later roda aunty came to meet mom and my mother was surprised to hear from her mouth about jamsheds worry about missing the boat because of some income tax work. Roda aunty went after an hour. At one oclock dad was home for lunch from the shop and mom told him what roda had said. That did it. Dad had a quick lunch, found out where jamshed was and met him at 3 oclock. Look jamshed it is pointless to beat around the bush. Let me handle the case. Show me the nitty-gritties of your case. Be prepared to shell out some dough. There is no need for you or your CA to come. Relax. Jamshed uncle relented. Dad came home ....next dad was at the income tax office without a single file. He first visit was an introductory one to meet the ITO concerned. Something like a prep talk. Two days later dad went with some necessary papers and a rather more laden wallet. It was a question of making the wallet lighter before the order could be processed. Then dad parted company with the dough. Okay hormajshah come after a week. It was time for hormajshah to lay his cards on the table. Dad said to the ITO..... i will come day after tomorrow at 3 pm only because tomorrow is a bank holiday. 3 pm . I want the assessment order ready as we have discussed. I just want to add that the asst commissioner and the appellate one are my friends and have come home and tasted my wifes culinary art. Also inspector so and so who is sitting outside is also known to me. Verify if you feel like it. So, day after tomorrow 3pm sharp. Dad gave his hand for a handshake and saw an ash struck face. He came back home and told my mom that his brother would get the order as desired in 2 days time. Two days later dad left home at 2-30 pm.and was back before 4-30 but not before handing over the income tax order to jamshed uncle. I remember jamshed throwing a luncheon party at the taj mahal where mum dad and i had gone too. A few days later jamsheds family set sail in SS Srathnover for vancouver. I was too young to understand anything dad had done for jamshed uncle. But years later when i was about 22 or so i asked dad about this story and he told it to me step by step. Dads last words were .....dont do business if your conscience bites you. If you do in a partnership of say four other brothers, treat the ITO as the fifth.
