AN OPEN LETTER I awoke this morning wanting to write you, although its probably an oddity, proof of the proverbial loose screw. . You might think its because I live in A remote place, Or because I live alone, the children having grown and gone off in into their own lives, Those things however have only made me confident enough to say something that Ive been feeling for a long time. I know that Im getting older, I ask you to repeat things, and Im slower to understand, Your life is more difficult too. Im sure with the company downsizing to save money, people are on hold longer, and more impatient. Even though I only call you to pay my electric bill, ask a question about my monthly MasterCard statement, or change my phone plan; I cant help feeling that we are part of something important together, and were closer once. Then, you knew I wondered how your family was and cared how your day day was going, especially if you sounded hurried and impersonal. I know some days I sounded irritated too. I try to catch myself and remember to apologize. Now spring is in the air, soon the flowers will sprout, leaves will return to the trees, and the smell of freshly cut grass will fill the air It feels like a good time to tell you; I know that youre not just the person who takes my credit card number, reviews my account, Or has to send me a letter when I have forgotten to take the bill, out of the pile, to pay you on time. You may be worrying about your budget too, or one of your children, an aging parent, medical bills, or any of the many things that I do: Or perhaps just gotten too little consideration from somebody who didnt understand that youre doing your best. Whatever the situation it occurred to me that today was a good day to remind you that we are each others extended family, that I know your life involves much more then what I need or know about, that I care and hope you feel respected by me, and that I can take a minute to offer patience when you need it. I promise I wont put you in a little cubbyhole, marked Representative From ... as if you were somehow different and less deserving than my next-door neighbor. Because I know that unless I make every interaction a part of the dance we all do together, a part of the circle, and celebration of caring and sharing, What seems like a moments aggravation will move through our human family, because we have forgotten once again that it is the meaning and the blessing of respect That connects us and fills our lives.
