ANC STATEMENT ON STATE OF READINESS FOR JANUARY 8TH EVENTS The African National Congress will host its 2015 anniversary celebrations this week in the Cape Town. The annual celebrations mark the importance of the African National Congress as the oldest and still surviving liberation movement in the continent. As we celebrate the 103 years of the ANC we do so having concluded a year since the passing of Nelson Mandela whose impact in the ANC and the country remains visible and a lasting legacy of our struggle. As the ANC descends to Cape Town we reminisce of the first walk celebration of Madiba as he emerged from 27 years of imprisonment which marked the beginning of the irreversible momentum leading to the 1994 establishment of a democratic state in South Africa. In celebrating the ANC anniversary we are also celebrating a number of critical struggles that were waged in the Western Cape. We celebrate the lives of Dullar Omar, Ray Simon, Christmas Tinto, Reggy September, Alex Laguma, Dr. Abdullah Abduraman, Henny Issel, Anton Fransch and Aunty Florie whose contribution gave impetus to our struggle. After a long tedious process of negotiating the usage of the Cape Town stadium, the contract has been signed which is critical for us to forge ahead with arrangements of hosting our celebrations. Towards these celebrations the ANC has engaged in an elaborate mobilization throughout the length and breadth of the Western Cape Province led by National Officials of the ANC. Mobilisation activities commenced in November and have gained momentum with NEC members partaking in these programmes during December. The mobilisation activities are primarily premised on, door to door, public or community meetings as well as blitz and walkabouts in various malls and townships. These will continue until the 9th of January 2015, culminating in the following activities: ➢ 8 January 2015 – All regions of the provinces will participate in the cutting of the cake and reading of the ANC by members to recommit themselves to the values of the ANC ➢ 9 January 2015 – A Gala Dinner will be hosted by the NEC at the CTICC and will be attended by 2500 guests ➢ 10 January – A statement of the NEC will be delivered by President Zuma. Proceedings of the day will start at 06h00 A total of 52 000 people are expected to attend the Saturday celebrations coming from all corners of the Western Cape as well as other provinces. These will include Traditional and religious leaders, Izithwalandwe, Alliance structures, Leagues of the ANC, deployed cadres, diplomatic corp represented in South Africa as well as those representing South Africa abroad, business leaders, civil society organisations and progressive NGOs. Towards this, a total 800 busses, more than 1000 taxis and trains have been secured to ferry people to the event. It should be noted that the demand of the ANC surpasses Cape Town and Western Cape transport availability hence we are battling to with the overwhelming numbers who want to attend the event. The response of our people and enthusiasm has been overwhelming as well as encouraging. We have noted with concern the attempt by the DA to undermine our celebrations through postponement of the minstrels’ event to coincide with our celebrations. The decision of the DA led Cape Town seeks to alienate the ANC by pitting them against a crucial component of our liberation struggle as captured by the spirit and content of the minstrel’s activities. The ANC holds the Minstrels’ events in high esteem as they capture a critical element of our liberation heritage. In addition to this, other challenges such as condition that are equal to influx control include the following: • Ticketing access to any rally is unheard of. We have hosted successful, well-planned and coordinated rallies since the unbanning of the ANC. • Rejection of our posters based on the design and font • Shuttling of people is equal to controlling access to the ANC rally.
