ANCYL Western Cape to Picket Outside Woolworths Head Office Today 29 September, 12-2pm, 93 Longmarket street, Cape Town CBD The ANC Youth League Western Cape will be picketing outside of Woolworths’ Head Office today, to demand that the franchise cuts all trade with the Apartheid state of Israel with immediate effect. The ANCYL, together with millions of South Africans have been consistent in this call, through a national campaign of marches, boycott and in-store demonstrations. Through this campaign it has been made abundantly clear to Woolworths that its consumers are not willing to support a store who’s proceeds fund war crimes in Palestine. One would think that it does not make business-sense for Woolworths to keep Israeli products on its shelves, when they only make up 0,01% of its product range and contribute only R12 million to Woolworths’ annual profits. We can only assume that Woolworths is operating out of sympathy with the Apartheid state of Israel, and not business-sense, as they continue to arrogantly defy the clear demand of South African consumers. The ANCYL fully supports the recent resolutions taken by the ANC-led alliance calling for an intensification of the boycott against Israel and in particular the calling on retail workers not to touch Israeli goods. As the ANC Youth League we also fully support the recent ANC National Executive Committee announcement of a full academic, cultural and broader boycott of Israel including the exclusion of certain international companies such as G4S, Catepillar and others currently operating illegally in the Occupied Palestinian territories. These resolutions and actions show a clear move towards the implementation of BDS which is being called for by the peace-loving people of South Africa. The ANCYL will gather in a peaceful picket outside the Woolworths Head Office to express our disgust and to show Woolworths that the Boycott Woolworths campaign is gaining momentum.
