AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT (AND LESS CYNICAL): John Cleese would have been known as Jack Cheese, but his father, who was a trooper in World War 1 changed his surname to stop his fellows poking fun. A public school boy, Cleese mixed with Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden (his mum couldnt spell Graham !). Whereas Cleese is best known for Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, Oddie, Garden and Tim Brook-Taylor were known for the Goodies. All were fans of The Goons and especially of Spike Milligan (Prince Charless pal). But they thought satirist Peter Cook their greater hero. Spike, of course, never went to public school, and was a footsoldier in World War 2. I guess he climbed Beyond The Fringe when he touched the imaginery crown of Prince Charles, too look down on the rest? The 1948 show, The Week That Was (with David Frost) Beyond The Fringe, Not Only Peter Cook But Also Dudley Moore, The Goons, Owl Stretching Time (Renamed Monty Pythons Flying Circus), The End Of The Pier Show, were the satirical, surreal, absurd, silly, comical programmes, that entertained us in the 60 and 70s, though predominantly upper-class comics/comedians. Apart from Spike, Dudley Moore and Bill Oddie. The latter two more middle or just under. Bill Oddie is now known for his birds (ooer), but had made early records with the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix members. Records that were humorous but are not well known.
