AND NOW THAT JONATHAN HAS SACKED ALL DOCTORS... I wish I could include in this piece, the Oath been taken by Nigerian medical inductees yearly, as this would help the populace to understand the inhuman and criminal deeds Doctors have been perpetrating. I was once opportuned to glimpse through a copy sometimes ago, those words are powerful and imbued with allegiant vigour. But as it stands now, they seem to have neglected their pledge and put self interest beyond social interest. For the past three weeks, Nigeria have been battling with Ebola outbreak which obviously require exigent and expert intervention. As at today, this epidemic disease have claimed three lives and also put 198 under surveillance. Just Yesterday, NEMAs report revealed that about 400,000 northerners have been rendered homeless, while several are in medical centers seeking intervention due to the continous Boko Haram attack in the area. It so now disheartening that at this moment of national crisis, doctors can choose to be intransigent in their request. The reality here is: Will the post of Surgeon General provide a cure for Ebola or will exorbitant allowance do? How is the work of a doctor affected by the appointment of the most senior health practitioner ( which might be a nurse or pharmacist) as the Director of the hospital? Or better asked, what value does it add when 16,000 doctors decide to sit back at the outbreak of a National crisis. Whether anyone think Mr president has done the required or not, the fact remains Nigeria will only grow when we are ready to put National interest beyond personal interest. It is noteworthy that since the beginning of this strike, government has not halted their monthly salary. And as popularly claimed, more than half of their demands have been met. Why cant they respond to their call for the sake of Nigeria masses. At this critical juncture, I like to sound my opinion that the only possible solution out of this whole imbrogilo, is for the NMA to go back to a round table dialogue for the issue to resolved latest tomorrow. Failure to do this will only escalate the matter. For at the moment, they hold the singular blame of not responding to a national call when the country need them most. If this can be done, I can assert with candour , that Jonathan would not be so cruel and despotic not to honour their request for dialogue. Juwonlo Dahunsi 15 August,2014
