AND TO THE COUNTLESS PEOPLE WHO KEEP SAYING THERE ARE TOO MANY SLAVERY FILMS OR HOW SICK AND TIRED OF SLAVERY FILMS THEY ARE, this research from Tarana Burke, so we can all get our facts straight when having these kinds of conversations: *There have been more than 1500 films released with African American themes or main characters since 1903. Of those films a whopping 15 are specifically about Slavery (there are some others that have enslaved people in them like Gone with the Wind - but Im not counting those) Of those 15 movies - THREE of them are remakes of Uncle Toms Cabin all made before the 70s. The others are: 1. Slaves (1972) [no I never heard of it either, but it stars Dionne Warwick] 2. Mandingo (1975) 3. Drum (1976) 4. Roots (1977) **TWELVE YEARS LATER** 5. Glory (1989) 6. Queen (1993) [no comment] 7. Sankofa (1993) [EVERYONE should see] 8. Amistad (1997) [which has been reduced to a punch line] 9. Beloved (1998) **FOURTEEN YEARS LATER** 10. Lincoln (2012) [and thats barely making the list really] 11. Django (2012) 12. 12 Years a Slave (2013) Please note (because Ive heard this) The Color Purple is NOT a slave narrative. Be clear it was 1914. Also, look at the range of these movies. Check out who wrote them, the plots and characters and what the audience walks away with. Compare that to 12 Years a Slave and then have several seats on the advance ticket sales line for A Madea Christmas while you discuss how there are too many slave movies.
