The grant will be used to fund various technical assistance and capacity building programs to strengthen the health delivery systems of the Department of Health (DOH).European Union Ambassador to the Philippines Guy Ledoux said that P586 million of the amount will fund DOH’s Build Back Better plan after Typhoon Yolanda. The grant is part of the Philippines Health Sector Reform Contract (PHSRC), the third EU funded program to support the Philippine Health Sector Reform Agenda. The agreement, which was signed on July 30, increases the total support of the EU to the health sector to approximately P7.2 billion between 2006 and 2018. The financing deal was signed by Europe Aid Cooperation for Asia Director Dirk Meganck, representing the EU and Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima, representing the Philippine government.“This very timely assistance will not only help strengthen the national government actions in rebuilding Typhoon Yolanda-hit areas, but also complement the current government direction towards enhancing Philippine delivery health systems for the Filipino people who are the backbone of this country’s strong economic growth and development,” Purisima said. DOH Secretary Enrique Ona, meanwhile, said the agreement provides “the much needed boost to further the health sector reforms towards the achievement of Universal Health Care for the Filipinos.”
