ANGER When you clench your fist, no one can put anything in your hands, nor can your hand pick up anything. Alex Haley, from Roots When we live with anger and hatred, we close ourselves to lifes possibilities. We learn to see only the negatives--the evil, brutality, selfishness, and destructiveness. We become blind to the kindness people try to offer us, and we deny that we can find anything genuinely good or worthwhile in life. If we are fortunate enough to get close to another person, our intimacy may eventually erode with our constant suspicion, distrust, ill temper, or pessimism. It is unlikely, that our clenched fist will spontaneously relax and open. We may first have to notice that it IS clenched before we can gradually begin to loosen it. We may have to practice trusting people, and learn how to pull back when we find ourselves relapsing into our old negative habits. AT THE END OF THIS DAY, I WILL TAKE FIVE MINUTES TO REMEMBER AT LEAST ONE GOOD THING THAT HAPPENED TO ME, OR A TASK, HOWEVER SMALL, THAT I COMPLETED THAT GAVE ME SATISFACTION.
