ANIMATION REVIEW #93: EPIC (2013) A 17-year-old girl named M.K. (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) moves in with her father Professor Bomba (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) who has been searching for tiny humanoid soldiers called “Leafmen”. They protect the forest in his backyard from evil creatures called “Boggans” and their leader Mandrake (voiced by Christoph Waltz). A soldier named Nod (voiced by Josh Hutcherson) decides to quit, much to the anger of the Leafmen leader named Ronin (voiced by Colin Farrell). The queen of the forest named Queen Tara (voiced by Beyoncé Knowles), must choose an heir to her throne and goes out to a field of leaf pods, guarded by a laid-back slug named Mub (voiced by Aziz Ansari) and a wannabe Leafman snail named Grub (voiced by Chris ODowd). Immediately after she chooses a pod, the Boggans attack. Queen Tara eventually dies. Meanwhile, M.K. decides to leave after having an argument with her father about his research. Before she can leave, Bombas dog Ozzy runs into the woods. While looking for Ozzy, M.K. sees Queen Tara falling. Dying, Queen Tara gives her the pod and uses her magic to shrink her. She tells M.K. to take the pod to a Glowworm named Nim Galuu before she dies, and M.K. joins Ronin and the Leafmen, along with Mub and Grub. They eventually find Nim Galuu (voiced by Steven Tyler) who leads them down to the scroll library, where M.K. discovers Taras brief message before shrinking her, and a message that will get her back to normal size. Mandrake gets the location of……….what’s the point? Some big battle, heroes win, happily ever after, the end. What Did I Think? It sucked! The only good thing about this movie is that the dog’s name was Ozzy. For a movie called ‘Epic”, it sure was boring. I have seen little microscopic things before in “Antz”, “A Bug’s Life” and several other movies. This movie never had to me made and the big-name actors probably just needed a paycheck. The songs were horrendous! This is one of my least favorite animated soundtracks ever! The animation was just okay and the music and sound effects were decent enough I guess. The voiceover acting was just a mess and the plot was mind-numbingly boring. The worst characters were the slug and snail. The best character was Ozzy the Dog. Overall, it sucked. End of story.
