ANNA EASES THE PAIN! Congratulations to Anna Bryla, one of the vets in Willows Anaesthesia team who recently gained the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Management of Pain, and not only that, Anna did it with Distinction! There are very few vets in the world who hold this degree, so this really is quite an achievement. During the three year course, undertaken whilst she was working full time at Willows, Anna studied eight different pain-related modules. Anna very much enjoyed her graduation ceremony, which took place on Friday 28th of November in McEwan Hall at the University of Edinburgh. The graduation ceremony at the Scottish University follows age old tradition, and during the proceedings the Principal doffs his bonnet (a flat, velvet cap) to the graduating students, a gesture which symbolises the giving of freedom. Students from over 160 countries graduated at the ceremony, and 14 of them were awarded with the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Management of Pain. Six of these graduands were able to attend the ceremony, and four of these, including Anna were vets. One student came from Nigeria and the other three were from the United Kingdom. Anna said afterwards “Whilst it has been hard work and quite challenging at times, I have really loved doing this course - I have learned so much about the mechanisms of the different types of pain (as well as some of its mysteries!), and how these different forms of pain can be predicted, detected and managed. It has made a definite difference to the way we think about pain in our patients at Willows and how we strive to make them as comfortable as possible on a day-to-day basis”.
