ANNOUNCEMENT PENALTIES Following the recent incident where a small dog, Billy, was abused and thrown barely alive into an activated crushing machine, many people have been asking us what is the penalty provided for such cases. Animal Party Cyprus is committed to informing the public about animal abuse cases and their progress through the Courts. Therefore, we would like to inform people about the penalty provided. According to Article 27 paragraph 1 of The Animal Protection and Welfare Act, Any person who contravenes or tolerates, assists, counsels or incites another to violate any of the mandatory or prohibitory provisions of this Act or issued thereunder Regulations or Orders relating to animal protection and welfare or any term of a license or authorization issued under this Act is guilty of an offense and shall, upon the first conviction, be liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding twelve months or to a fine not exceeding £1,000 or to both sentences, and, in the case of second or subsequent conviction, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding twenty-four months or to a fine not exceeding £ 2,000 or to both sentences.» We believe that the sentence of imprisonment not exceeding one year, or € 1.792 fine is not a deterrent and does not reflect the seriousness of the offenses provided for in the Act, which include: “(a) in any way roaming an animal in a situation leading to its horrible death, (b) the death of an animal for entertainment or other unacceptable purposes, including the use of animals as targets for practice, (c) organize matches between animals or with animals, during which the latter are being abused or killed, (d) the use of living animals for dog training or aggression control, except when the dogs were trained or tested on artificial nest and conditions to be determined; (i) the hard work and training of the animal that verges on torture and (j) tethering and drawing the animal to a automotive vehicle in a manner that may cause stress, injury and suffering” (Article 5 paragraph 2 of The Animal Protection and Welfare Act).
