ANOTHER RVP SITUATION LOOMING.... A lot has been said about Arsenal’s odd bid of £40,000,001 for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. Arsenal fans are justifiably happy that Arsenal is making a move for one of the most gifted footballers in the world at the moment. After all, Suarez has scored loads of goals wherever he has played. However, in the midst of the anticipation and excitement Gunners need to ask themselves some serious questions. What if Suarez was currently an Arsenal player trying to force a move to say, Man City? Last season, RVP made a move up north to Manchester. Many fans were unhappy because having been out injured for most of his Arsenal career, Arsenal FC had stayed loyal to him and supported him. How then would he repay the faith by moving to Premier League rivals, Manchester United? And that, after giving us his first injury-free season? So how are the two scenarios similar? For the past two seasons, Suarez has been guilty of one misdemeanour or the other and yet his employers staunchly stood by his side. When the media (rightly) made England untenable for Suarez, the player indicated a desire to move out of the country. Yet, the player would flip-flop and seek a move to yet another English side on the promise of UCL football! Unlike RVP’s case though, the travails of Suarez are largely self-inflicted. Gunners should never forget that Real Madrid and NOT Arsenal is Suarez’s first choice. Now consider: Suarez propels Arsenal to EPL glory and scores 30 goals next season. What’s the guarantee the player would stay true to us if he suddenly became more attractive to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona? I like Suarez very much, his football genius I mean. In fact, I am still surprised why Wenger never made a move for the player while he was at Ajax. However, I would imagine if I were a Liverpool fan I would feel highly aggrieved by Suarez’s hankering over a move especially after a controversial season. On Arsenal’s part, this is a very high risk transfer that may end disastrously. (Already we are guaranteed to lose Suarez for 6 games next season). What’s the guarantee he will not bite yet another player while in an Arsenal shirt? What’s the guarantee he will receive no further lengthy suspensions during his sojourn with us? Should Suarez only be able to bear with us for 2 seasons, we should remember that we were never his first choice and his precedents show he’ll have no issues doing to us what he has done to Liverpool.
