ANOTHER TOP 10. Our A3 team were out again today (Saturday) in the Bray wheelers hosted, 57th Shay Elliott Memorial race. On what was described as a “winters day” the riders endured tough conditions en-route to 1 of the toughest climbs on the racing circuit.. The 89km long stage claimed many victims including 1 of our own. Team Slipstream was a man short today as they will be for the immediate future with Paul finishing so well in the Gorey 3 day and been moved up to A2. Declan, Denis, Wayne and Dermot braved the elements in what was to turn out to be a tough slog all the way. Approximately 40km in there was a big spill in front of Dermot and he was last seen flying through the air. Remounting about a minute down, disorientated, cut, sore and battered he set about an impossible task of getting back on but it was not to be, he battled on, collecting up 5 other stragglers on the way. Get well soon Dermot. At the front however things were different, Declan was being Declan and had made a couple of breaks off the front after bridging across to a break. The 2nd attempt coming just before the big climb of Glenmalure. He got over it safely in a group of 3, but another group mainly juniors’ including some of the Nicholas Roche team bridged across shortly after that and it was “all guns blazing” from there on in. With the fire power of the juniors at the sprint, Declan finished inside the top 10, a good result on a rough day. Wayne and Denis (rock steady Eddie) were in the next bunch of about 18/20 riders and they finished to the fore of that group about 1min 30secs down. A fine ride considering the whole field had blown to bits. Another good day for our small club. BigNoel……………………………
