ANOTHER VARIETY OF AN OLD SCAM Today, I received information about an old scam being perpetrated. I would have thought that everyone is aware of these, but apparently not. This scam sends you some information and includes what looks like a certified check from an out of state credit union or bank. The letter attached says you have be recruited to be a Secret Shopper for a marketing company. It instructs you to go to your bank and cash the check. The letter further advises not to tell your bank teller about the fact that you are a secret shopper . After cashing the check the bank advises you to go purchase certain items which you can keep and evaluate, then you can keep some of the money but you are told to go to Western Union to send certain fees back to the company and you will be getting more checks in the future. The whole problem with this scam is the original certified check is a fake. Your bank may cash the check for you knowing that it can charge the amount back to you if the check is bad (which it is). You are then out the amount which you sent back to the company for fees etc.... Unfortunately, many people are fooled by these scams thinking that if your bank cashes the check for you, there is nothing to lose........WRONG. Folks, if it seems foolproof, it is a scam. In some instances, the company will send you another larger fake certified check and bilk you out of even more before the original check is returned no such account. Please dont be a victim.
