ANSAM lashes out at tribal MLAs Imphal, October 8 (NNN): Naga students today lashed out at tribal MLAs in Manipur. Showing discontentment over the inefficient functioning of the Hill Area Committee (HAC), the All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) today urged the committee to maintain its responsibilities well in looking after the welfare of the hill people who are the backward sections of the society. Tribal MLAs are the members of HAC. Seth Shatsang, president of ANSAM told media-persons at Manipur Press Club today that the HAC should address the problems which the hill people face. "The HAC has been remaining mute even after the Silent Village problem where 36 houses including vehicles and essential commodities were burnt to cinders by the Seijang villagers on May 3 this year. The villagers are still in the state of shock and fear putting up temporary houses at Silent Village. "According to Article 371 (C) of the Indian Constitution, it is the responsibility of a Hill Area Committee to look after the problems faced by the hill people but the HAC of Manipur still remains a silent spectator and is not paying any heed to the grievances faced by the Silent villagers even after police personnel came down to the village and dismantled three more houses on October 1," said the Naga student leader. Seth alleged that the police personnel had violated the Cabinet order even though "Status quo ante" was mentioned in the decision. There is also an undergoing issue regarding the border fencing of India-Myanmar but the HAC and the governor of the state still remain aloof from the matter which is very unfortunate. The ANSAM chief further asked the Government whether the principle of justice exists. He said that if the government does not lay down the proper demarcation of territorial boundaries, then many more conflicts are bound to arise.
