ANTHEM RECORDS WILL BE CLOSED RSD 2014.... Record store day has always been a subject of trepidation for us. In early years there where some pretty good items coming out from labels for stores for the occasion, so it truly seemed like these labels and distributors where attempting to help support the physical medium through record stores. As years have gone by, it has turned into more of a cash grab, both for labels who are traditionally used to offering their fans less and asking more, and the individuals who would go out and try to grab up all these items to resell at a premium. All the while, these companies had the ability to hype these releases, and thus the circle jerk would commence, year after year. In the process, the very activity of RSD has become the antithesis of what it was intended for, case in point being the bins of unsold RSD items populating some of the larger stores in town. In past years, Anthem Records has sidestepped this by offering exclusive items from one or more of our three in house labels, or, as last year, do a special in store involving local labels, all showcasing their sounds in the way of performances, and releasing recordings special for that day, as it was much more in line with supporting the community than sending a bunch of money out of town for the usual RSD fodder. This year, there just is not anything synching up for the date. Our latest release, a single by Agalloch, will not be out until May, and the labels we spoke to who are in line with what we do here at Anthem do not have anything coming out at this time. That being the case, we are taking the extraordinary step in contrary to most stores, and staying closed for Record Store Day. As for the Agalloch single, it will be available one to a present customer over the counter at the store, shortly after their tour launch May 16th at the Star theater.
